Technology is wondrous, data could be immersive, and the combined strength is unbelievable. Digital transformation is a top priority for most businesses. Partially digitized businesses are contemplating the move to the next level. Read Gartnerstudy for the detailed numbers. My purpose is to simplify the digital transformation path in a way that everyone could relate to and prepare for that future.
I tell this with complete confidence, even if there is an end to this trend, it certainly will not be in our lifetime.
In the 1800s, when the railroad was being built along with westward land development, circumstances forced many people to take new jobs. People looked for new jobs and were willing to move away from the life they knew because the current job did not provide for well or they lost it altogether.
They faced major issues in work environment, pay and more. Women earned less than half of what men earned and skilled/unskilled laborers were paid vastly different, and the majority suffered due to poor living conditions. Irrespective of the issues more and more people kept migrating west for decades and survived in the new life because the environment and economy were forcing that change.
Why do I say this? From discovering fire to inventing semiconductors, every problem humans faced were solved with one or more innovations. Each major innovation makes new winners and losers. Technology has made it possible to reduce many divides among us and has provided us with a comparatively fair playground. Technology touches every life in ways that we are not even aware of. Seed engineering, medical research, military intelligence are just a few examples of the deep reach data and technology has on all of us. Back then online courses did not exist, neither free training/free trial platforms nor certifications. In short, an easy pathway from unskilled to skilled workforce did not exist.
Now, all we need is a clear goal and some enthusiasm to learn. Everyone has the potential to become part of the data and the digital workforce in a short amount of time. Even if that is not the goal, understanding the digital and technical platform will help in performing the current role efficiently. The digital transformation is happening whether we want it not. Let us embrace it and prepare ourselves.
